NATIONAL Wildlife Refuge Week Celebration

NWR CELEBRATION tHIRD SATURDAY IN OCTOBER

To honor and mark Roosevelt's establishment of this nation's extraordinary park system in 1903 that has since grown to over 500 refuges. The Friends of Quivira and Quivira NWR staff celebrate NWR Week on the third Saturday in October, with a day-long event. From the explorers, Lewis and Clark, to celebrating the Refuge's Native American heritage, the event has a new theme each year that focuses on the Refuge's wildlife or history.

Ride the Refuge Trolley, purchased by Friends of Quivira and donated to the Quivira Refuge, to several displays and demonstrations located along a path through the trees lining the Kids' Fishing Pond. Past stops have included falconry, bird-banding demonstrations, mountain man demonstrations and live animal displays and shows.  Children's crafts are available on the other side of the Kids' Fishing Pond, where several craft projects await. The Friends of Quivira campfire cooks and volunteers provide a feast that has included sumptuous stews and roast hog with dressing. The day wraps up with a feature performance.
