FIRST SATURDAY IN JUNE, HANDS ON LEARNING AND FISHING
JUNE 2th, 2012. Pre-Registration is encouraged
"Big fish, little fish, red fish, blue fish." It doesn't really matter, the smile is the same when a child lands his or her first, second or third fish. The first Saturday in June, Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and The Friends of Quivira offer the Kids' Fishing Day, with an hour of hands on learning, followed by fishing at the Kid's Fishing Pond. The event is for children 14 years old and younger. Volunteers provide 15-minute lessons about casting, knot tying, fish identification and safety. Members from Sandhill Bass Club provide live fish for kids to touch and view for identification purposes. The catfish is always a popular exhibit. From the Visitors Center, participants make their way to the Kids' Fishing Pond, just a short drive away, where the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has stocked the pond with plenty of catfish.
